The Farr Stone Cross-Slab
Farr, Scotland
The Farr Stone, a cross-slab from Sutherland, is a very fine piece of Celtic
Art. Around the outside of the cross there is interlaced knotwork merging into
rams-horn designs. The cross itself provides a most unusual symbolism; the shaft
represents the world-axis rising up to the circle of heaven and the central
spiral represents the Divinity. In addition, the shaft rises from a
hemispherical mound with two winged beasts with their necks intertwined inside
the mound. This symbolism reminds us of Vortigern's Tower in the Arthurian
legends that would not stand up for Vortigern because he had not subdued the
beasts beneath, symbolic for achieving peace within.
