Ahenny Cross North Cross,
East Face, Co. Tipperary, Ireland
Low on the stem of the North Cross at Ahenny a geometric motif is found in three
rows on top of each other. Within the ring an interwoven web emerges from the
sun symbol and weaves through and animates the dead stone. The cross as a symbol
of death is covered by a force field of life that penetrates everything. The
cross becomes the “Tree of Life.” Even today, the cross at Ahenny conveys some
idea of the life-giving effect the crosses once had on men in tune with mythic
religion.
