Nigg Cross
Easter Ross, Scotland

The Nigg stone, of the 8th century, is part of a triad of stones found along the eastern coast of Ross-hire within a few miles of each other. The Hilton of Cadboll and the Shandwick stones are monuments to three Norse brothers, whose bodies were washed up on the shore after a great storm after trying to rescue their sister from Balnagown Castle. The Nigg stone stood in the churchyard for centuries until it was broken during a hurricane in 1727, it is preserved today in a side room at the Old Nigg Parish Church. Entwined on the cross are lions, king of beasts, were used to represent Christ the King.
