Ghent, Belgium The butterfly and the shape of the cross were actually taken from two different headstones but both of these are in the city of Ghent. The shape of the cross itself is a fairly common one in Belgium. Butterflies have been prevalent symbols throughout history and they have been said to have different meanings to different cultures through time. Some common themes throughout different cultures that they represent include resurrection, endurance, change, hope, and life. In several cultures the butterflies are said to signify our souls. They also symbolize the transformation of our souls as we grow. 5 ½” x 8 ½”
