Carndonough Cross

$61.00 USD

This ringless cross of Carndonough, was traditionally regarded as on of the earliest cross because of the simple incised technique of carving and the broad ribbon interlace. A later date, sometime in the 9th century, is now preferred. The east face has two figured scenes. The larger of the two is the "The Crucifixion" with angels above and below Christ's outstretched arms. The lower scene is thought to be the three holy women walking toward the tomb, a scene that was frequently substituted for, but indicating "The Resurrection". With the cross complete and set in place, it would have been painted in bright colors.

Dimensions: 12" x 5"

Due to the hand casting and proprietary staining process, each of my plaques is unique. Each cross comes with a hanger embedded in the stone. The cross comes with a descriptive tag describing the original stone, explanation of the design or information on where the cross is located.
