The Toulouse Cross is inspired by the art nouveau style, which swept most of the Western world at the end of the 19th century. Art Nouveau was an avant-garde movement using organic forms that emphasized humanity's connection to nature. Inspiration was drawn from natural elements, plants, animals and elegant landscapes, presented in swirling and rhythmic abstract designs. The tulips entwined so beautifully on this cross have for centuries represented love. A red tulip meaning "Declaration of Love" and a yellow tulip for "Hopeless Love"
